Moisturizer is personal!
Your skin craves hydration, so your moisturizer should deliver it. When choosing one, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to keep your skin well-hydrated.
Get to know your skin type.
Understanding your skin is crucial for long-term results. I’ve struggled with hyperpigmentation and oily skin, and working with a dermatologist helped me prioritize what to address first. It’s important to know that you can have more than one skin type, such as combination/oily or combination/dry. Track how your skin changes throughout the month or during life transitions. Your skin evolves, so stay in tune!
Sunscreen is your best defense!
While tackling hyperpigmentation, I underestimated the importance of sunscreen. I’d see spots fade only to have them reappear after sun exposure. UV rays can bring discoloration back to the surface, causing a frustrating cycle. Use a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 (I prefer 50) daily. Sunscreen not only helps prevent dark spots but also protects collagen from sun damage.
Stress is your skin’s enemy.
When you’re stressed, your body releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can increase oil production and clog pores, leading to breakouts.
You are what you eat.
Nourishing your body with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats can result in fewer wrinkles and less dryness. On the flip side, diets high in sugar and processed foods can cause inflammation, breakouts, and premature aging.
Limit alcohol and smoking.
Smoking and excessive alcohol can significantly speed up skin aging and affect facial volume. Moderation is key to preserving healthy skin.
Genetics matter, but hydration is key!
Genetics play a big role in how your skin ages—around 50-60% according to recent studies. But the rest is influenced by lifestyle factors you can control, like hydration. Drinking enough water helps keep your skin elastic and reduces wrinkles and fine lines. So, drink up for healthier skin!
