The National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) has called for accelerated implementation of Nigeria’s tourism policy, arguing that effective policy execution is the key to unlocking the sector’s transformative potential for the Nigerian economy.
NANTA, which represents travel agencies and tour operators across Nigeria, has been a vocal advocate for a more structured approach to tourism development. The association argues that while Nigeria has a tourism policy on paper, the gap between policy and practice has held the sector back from achieving its potential.
At the heart of NANTA’s advocacy is the push for Nigerian travel brands to expand their reach both domestically and internationally. The association believes that Nigerian travel agencies, tour operators, and hospitality businesses have the talent and ambition to compete globally — if given the right enabling environment.
One of NANTA’s key proposals is the establishment of a dedicated tourism development fund that would provide low-interest financing for travel businesses. Access to capital has been a persistent challenge for Nigerian entrepreneurs in the sector, particularly smaller operators who lack the collateral required by traditional banks.
The association is also calling for better data collection and market intelligence. Without reliable tourism statistics, it’s difficult to make informed policy decisions or attract investment. NANTA argues that a national tourism data system would help quantify the sector’s contribution and identify growth opportunities.
NANTA’s vision extends beyond policy to practical support for Nigerian brands. The association is developing training programmes, certification standards, and digital tools to help travel businesses modernise their operations and reach new customers online — increasingly important in a post-pandemic world where digital booking dominates.
For Nigerian travellers and the diaspora, NANTA’s advocacy could mean better travel services, more competitive pricing, and a wider range of domestic tourism options. A stronger tourism sector benefits everyone — from the traveller booking a weekend getaway to the artisan selling crafts at a local market.
