The W National Park (French: Parc national du W) or W Regional Park (French: W du Niger) is a significant national park located in West Africa, encompassing a meander in the Niger River shaped like the letter W (French: double v). This expansive park spans areas across three countries: Niger, Benin, and Burkina Faso, governed by the respective national governments. Formerly supported by the EU-funded project ECOPAS (Protected Ecosystems in Sudano-Sahelian Africa, French: Ecosystèmes protégés en Afrique soudano-sahélienne) until 2008, the park is collectively managed by the three governments under the name W Transborder Park (French: Parc Regional W). In June 2020, the section of W National Park in Benin, covering over 8,000 km2 (3,100 sq mi), came under the full management of African Parks. This section of the park is contiguous with Pendjari National Park, also managed by African Parks.
History: The W National Park in Niger was established by decree on August 4, 1954, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Designated as a National Park (IUCN Type II) within Niger, it forms part of a larger network of reserves and protected areas, including the neighboring Dallol Bosso (Wetlands of International Importance – Ramsar) on the eastern bank of the Niger River and the partially overlapping “Parc national du W” (Wetlands of International Importance – Ramsar). All three parks are recognized by BirdLife International as Important Bird Areas (IBAs).
Geography: Encompassing approximately 10,000 km2 (3,900 sq mi) across Niger, Benin, and Burkina Faso, the regional park is largely uninhabited. It was historically a malarial zone of wetlands formed by the delta of the Mékrou River with the Niger, interspersed with rocky hills. The area boasts significant archaeological sites, primarily tombs, attesting to its past as a major human habitation area.
Flora: The park features 454 recorded plant species, including two orchids unique to Niger. Additionally, it marks the southern limit of tiger bush plateaus distribution in Niger.
Fauna: W National Park is renowned for its diverse array of large mammals, such as aardvark, baboon, African buffalo, caracal, cheetah, African bush elephant, hippopotamus, African leopard, West African lion, serval, and warthog. The park serves as a crucial habitat for some of West Africa’s last wild African elephants. Although the rare West African giraffe is absent from the area, the park historically hosted packs of the endangered West African wild dog, although local extinction is possible. It is also a stronghold for the Northwest African cheetah, with an estimated small population of 25 individuals across the W–Arli–Pendjari protected area complex.
The park is a haven for birdlife, with over 350 species identified, making it an Important Bird Area according to BirdLife International.
