Despite the influx of Hollywood titles, Yoruba epics continue to perform well in Nigerian cinemas. The Yoruba-style epic film titled “Orisa,” starring Odunlade Adekola, has achieved remarkable success, nearing ₦100 million in gross profits within just three weeks of its release. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as the film has maintained the fourth position on the domestic box office chart while still being the top-performing local title in Nigerian cinema.
According to figures released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), “Orisa” generated over ₦20 million in revenue from August 4, 2023, to August 10, 2023. The film opened with an impressive ₦40 million between July 21, 2023, and July 27, 2023. In the subsequent week, from July 28, 2023, to August 3, 2023, it garnered an additional ₦28 million, bringing its total earnings to over ₦88 million in just three weeks.
“Orisa” is currently still being shown in cinemas nationwide, and it is expected to achieve the milestone of ₦100 million gross within its first month of theatrical release.
In the box office rankings, “Barbie” continues to hold the number one position, accumulating over ₦37 million from August 4, 2023, to August 10, 2023, and reaching a cumulative total of ₦160 million since its release. “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One” stands in the second spot with ₦28 million, having been in cinemas for a month and grossing a total of ₦200 million.
A newcomer, “Meg 2: The Trench,” secured the third position in its debut week, generating ₦33 million in revenue.
With the anticipation of new Nigerian titles like “Mikolo” hitting theaters this week, there is hope for continued success and dominance of local movies at the box office.
