On Monday in Abuja, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially introduced Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The Malian tactician succeeds interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who successfully led the team to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Chelle’s immediate challenge will be to guide the team through their World Cup qualifying campaign, despite their rocky start. His mission is to secure Nigeria’s spot in the prestigious tournament set to take place in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Chelle’s Experience and Vision
Addressing concerns about his managerial credentials, the 47-year-old shared his coaching journey and vision. Speaking to RFI via Matin Libre, he stated:
“Many believe I lack experience, but I disagree. I retired from playing in 2014 and began coaching immediately. I’ve managed teams in West Africa and Algeria, including the Mouloudia Club d’Oran, which gave me a deep understanding of African football.
“I’m ready to lead this great team with exceptional players. My vision aligns with the Super Eagles’ strengths, and I’m committed to mutual growth—helping the players improve while learning from them too.”
Managing Star Players
Chelle emphasized his collaborative approach with top talents like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. “These are extraordinary players and individuals. I’ll bring humility but also confidence in my strategy. Establishing open dialogue will be key to our success.”
Upcoming Fixtures
In March 2025, Chelle will face a crucial test as Nigeria takes on Rwanda and Zimbabwe in pivotal World Cup qualifiers. His goal will be to rejuvenate the team’s campaign and reignite hopes of securing a place on the global stage.
