What does a mother of five, an IT expert, and a fitness pioneer have in common? Everything — if you’re Nancy Chiuri. From her home in Pretoria to prisons and orphanages across Africa, she’s helping women rediscover their strength and confidence.
Nancy Chiuri balances her youngest son on her shoulders, his laughter filling the air as she lowers into a deep squat. For Nancy, fitness is not just a routine; it’s a way of life seamlessly integrated into her daily activities. Whether it’s using a park bench, water bottles, or her children as part of her exercises, she embodies a practical approach to wellness.
“Motherhood gives you enough weight to carry—sometimes literally,” she jokes. “Why not turn it into something that builds you up?”
This philosophy is the backbone of Mama Fitness Kenya, a wellness initiative Nancy founded to empower women and mothers to prioritize fitness in their everyday lives. Her mission is simple yet transformative: inspire women to begin their fitness journeys with whatever resources they have, wherever they are.
An IT expert with a Master’s in Project Planning and Management, Nancy is also a motivational speaker. She emphasizes that fitness is not just about physical strength but also about regaining confidence, balance, and a sense of self. Her programs—tailored for women in diverse circumstances—focus on holistic well-being, combining physical, mental, and emotional health.
Nancy’s work extends far beyond gyms and households. In Nairobi, she implemented fitness programs for incarcerated women at Langata Women’s Prison. Many of these women, who are mothers themselves, found solace and empowerment through her sessions. Nancy’s initiative provided a pathway for these women to reclaim control, manage stress, and rebuild confidence.
“In prison, fitness became a way for these women to find purpose and regain a sense of agency,” she says.
Her adaptability and vision have led her to marginalised communities across Africa. She has conducted wellness workshops in rural areas and underprivileged urban neighborhoods, using everyday items like water bottles and furniture to create accessible fitness routines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she transitioned to online platforms, hosting virtual fitness sessions and panel discussions on topics such as maternal health and mental resilience. This pivot connected her with a pan-African audience and cemented Mama Fitness Kenya as a leading resource for holistic wellness.
Nancy’s slogan, “Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy community,” underscores her belief that strong mothers build strong families and, ultimately, strong communities. Her efforts have expanded to countries like Ethiopia and South Africa, where she collaborates with local organizations to develop culturally sensitive postpartum fitness programs. She also uses her IT expertise to enhance the systems and operations of schools and orphanages she supports.
Despite her demanding schedule, Nancy’s family remains her anchor. Based in Pretoria, she and her five boys begin their mornings with physical activity, from walks to football games. Meals are homemade and nutritious, and evenings are dedicated to bonding through conversations about books, school projects, or life lessons. Prayer is a cornerstone of their family routine, offering balance and connection.
Mama Fitness Kenya has grown into a recognizable brand with a loyal following on social media, where Nancy shares workout routines, healthy living tips, and glimpses of her family life. Looking ahead, she envisions Mama Fitness Kenya becoming a global movement. Her plans include creating fitness curriculums for schools, launching affordable fitness gear, and expanding her online platform with multilingual content to reach a broader audience.
As Nancy sets her youngest son down after a workout, her movements are fluid and purposeful. Her journey is far from over, and her vision is clear: one empowered woman at a time, she is building a healthier, stronger world.
