Mr. Jonny Baxter, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, attended the inaugural Enugu State Diaspora and Investment Roundtable hosted by Governor Peter Mbah to support economic growth, job creation, and strengthen trade and investment ties. This stakeholder roundtable facilitated high-level discussions aimed at advancing viable investments, enhancing trade, and creating more economic opportunities within Enugu State.
During his opening remarks, Baxter emphasized the United Kingdom’s commitment to encourage British companies to invest in the region and underscored the importance of creating a favorable business environment in collaboration with the Enugu State government. He also highlighted the UK’s new Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) and its potential to contribute to Nigeria’s private sector-led economic transformation, particularly in Enugu State. Baxter mentioned that products like cashew and plantain, which are predominantly cultivated in Enugu and other southeastern states, could find export opportunities in the UK based on market demand in both countries.
The Enugu State Investment Roundtable attracted participation from development partners, senior executives from the public and private sectors, as well as domestic financial institutions.
In a related event, on Thursday in Enugu, Boma Amieyeofori, the Chevening Programme Officer, conducted a workshop at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to educate attendees on the application process for the UK’s fully-funded Chevening scholarship. Amieyeofori emphasized that the Chevening scholarship aims to provide Nigerian individuals with aspirations for positive change the opportunity to pursue a fully-funded master’s degree. The scholarship program fosters an international community of change-makers by supporting them through education to achieve their goals. Applications for the Chevening scholarship will open on September 12 and remain open for eight weeks, encouraging passionate individuals dedicated to driving positive change to apply.
