5 Things to Know About Uganda’s Ghetto Kids Ahead of Their 2026 World Cup Final Performance

    0
By Ibidapo Martins on June 4, 2026 Celebrity News

From Kampala to the Global Stage: The Incredible Journey of the Ghetto Kids

If you have spent any time scrolling through social media lately, you have almost certainly stopped in your tracks to watch the Ghetto Kids. With their infectious smiles, impeccable rhythm, and gravity-defying moves, this Ugandan dance sensation has a way of capturing hearts across the globe.

The group recently reached a new career high, bringing their signature energy to “Dai Dai,” the official 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem featuring Shakira and Burna Boy. As the world prepares for their massive appearance alongside Shakira at the World Cup final halftime show on July 19 at MetLife Stadium, let’s dive into five essential facts about the creators who are putting Kampala on the world map.

    1. They Rose from the Slums of Katwe

The Ghetto Kids’ story is one of resilience and hope. Founded in 2014 by Dauda Kavuma, the group originated in the Katwe slums of Kampala, Uganda. Kavuma’s mission went beyond just dance; since 2007, his foundation has provided a lifeline for street children. By using music, dance, and drama, the organization offers:

    • Safe shelter and housing
    • Nutritional support
    • Formal education and vocational training

Today, the group supports 60 children between the ages of 4 and 16, all coming from underprivileged backgrounds and finding a brighter future through the arts.

    2. A Viral Video Changed Their Lives Overnight

While they are global stars now, it all started with a homemade video. In 2014, the group gained international fame when their dance routine to Eddy Kenzo’s hit “Sitya Loss” went viral. Their momentum only grew from there. In 2017, they collaborated with world-renowned choreographer Sherrie Silver for a routine to the Afro-house track “Marimba Rija,” which racked up over 25 million views and cemented their status as internet royalty.

    3. They Made History on “Britain’s Got Talent”

The Ghetto Kids aren’t just viral stars; they are record-breakers. During their appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, they achieved something no other act had ever done: they received a Golden Buzzer in the middle of their performance! The judges were so blown away by their joy and talent that they couldn’t wait for the song to end. This historic moment propelled them all the way to the competition finals and introduced them to millions of new fans across Europe.

    4. They Have an Incredible Global Portfolio

The upcoming World Cup performance is just the latest entry in an already packed resume. Over the years, the Ghetto Kids have commanded some of the world’s most prestigious stages. You might recognize them from:

    • French Montana’s “Unforgettable” music video
    • Performances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
    • A major debut at the Oslo Business Forum in 2025

Their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed, either. They have earned an AFRIMMA Award, a YouTube Creators Award, and official recognition from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

    5. They Are Co-Starring in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

What started as a viral dance challenge for a Shakira song has turned into a professional partnership. After appearing in the official music video for “Dai Dai” (directed by Hannah Lux Davis), the group has been hand-picked by Shakira to join her live on stage for the halftime show at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. On July 19, these talented dancers from Kampala will perform in front of a global television audience expected to exceed one billion viewers. Talk about a full-circle moment!
