Soccer Fever Hits the Big Apple: NYC Names Streets After Henry and Pelรฉ
The 2026 World Cup is officially upon us, and the energy in New York City is absolutely electric! As fans from across the globe descend upon the five boroughs, the city has found a spectacular way to honor the legends who made the “beautiful game” what it is today. In a move that has delighted locals and tourists alike, New York has officially renamed iconic street corners after soccer royalty: Thierry Henry and the late, great Pelรฉ.
If you find yourself strolling through downtown Manhattan, you might notice a new landmark. At the intersection of West 50th Street and 6th Avenue, city officials and a massive crowd of cheering fans recently gathered to unveil โThierry Henry Way.โ Itโs a fitting tribute to the former Arsenal and Barcelona icon who also spent years stateside, leaving an indelible mark on the MLS with the New York Red Bulls.
Honoring the King of Football
The tribute doesn’t stop with Henry. The city is also paying homage to the man many consider the greatest to ever play the game: Pelรฉ. By renaming streets in honor of these icons, New York is bridging the gap between its own rich sporting historyโlike Pelรฉโs legendary years with the New York Cosmosโand the modern era of global football.
These temporary renamings are more than just a change of signage; they represent a warm “welcome home” to the worldโs most popular sport. As the 2026 World Cup kicks off, these streets will serve as meeting points for fans to celebrate, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere of the tournament.
What to Look Out For
Planning to visit the new landmarks? Here is what you need to know:
- Thierry Henry Way: Located at West 50th Street and 6th Avenue in the heart of Manhattan.
- Atmosphere: Expect vibrant crowds, street performers, and plenty of fans wearing their favorite national team jerseys.
- Photo Ops: These signs are temporary for the duration of the World Cup festivities, so make sure to grab your selfies while they last!
New York has always been a melting pot of cultures, and there is no better way to showcase that spirit than by honoring international heroes on the very streets that make the city famous. Whether youโre a die-hard soccer fan or just someone caught up in the World Cup excitement, make sure to take a walk down these legendary paths!
